The Aurora African American Heritage Advisory Board provides annual scholarships to college-bound African American students. The AAHAB scholarship is named in honor of trailblazing Auroran Mr. Henry Cowherd and the recipients of the scholarships are deemed Cowherd Scholars.

Eligible applicants for the 2024 scholarship must:
• be a current high school senior
• have a minimum 2.50 GPA on 4.0 scale
• be of African American descent
• be a resident of Aurora or attend a school located in Aurora
• SUBMIT A COMPLETED ONLINE APPLICATION BY 5 P.M. ON MONDAY, JANUARY 20, 2025.

Each year, the Aurora African American Heritage Advisory Board bestows upon one African American community advocate the distinguished title of ‘Leader of the Year.’

Named in honor of the late Alderwoman Scheketa Hart-Burns, the ‘Leader of the Year’ Award is presented to an individual who represents Aurora’s Black community in an exemplary way and stands as a pillar of excellence for that year or over time.

The 2025 Scheketa Hart-Burns Leader of the Year Award will be presented at the 19th annual Heritage Dinner on Friday, February 28, 2025.
